President Umaru Yar‘Adua
The President, in his Christmas and New Year message, hinged his promise on the changes in the Federal Executive Council through the recent cabinet reshuffle.
He said Nigerians should enter the New Year with renewed faith in his administration.
Yar’Adua expressed a strong belief that at last, Nigeria would begin to realise its immense potential.
He said, “In the New Year, this administration shall match this national character and strive harder to meet the national aspiration for greatness.
“Long deferred, the promise of Nigeria shall not continue to remain just a potential. It will soon be redeemed. Our season of renewal has dawned.
“We remain fully committed to delivering on our promise of a better standard of living for all Nigerians through our Seven-Point Agenda.
“The recent revitalisation of the Executive arm of government is meant to give greater effect to this commitment.
“With the systematic planning process that we have put in place and our renewed team; we will forge ahead with our agenda for rapid improvements in critical areas with greater vigour and total dedication, even as we face the challenge of attuning ourselves to the pressures of global economic recession and plunging oil prices.”
The President added that many of his outstanding inaugural promises would be delivered in the New Year.
These include the long anticipated power emergency plan, the electoral reforms and the oil and gas sector reforms.
He said, “Among other things, our action plan for the power sector will be implemented; concessioning will be introduced as a novel and effective means of maintaining public highways; the Niger Delta Ministry will take off as a key element in our programme of action for the region; the promised reform of our oil and gas sector will commence to the benefit of all Nigerians; and our educational sector will be revitalised to drive our march to growth and sustainable development.
“The year 2009 will also be momentous in the critical reforms that we intend to bring to bear in our land laws, in the police, and in our electoral system.”
However, in other to realise these promises, the President said there was the need for all Nigerians to live together in peace and brotherliness.
Yar’Adua, therefore, directed security agencies and state governors to ensure the safety of both indigenes and non-indigenes in all parts of the country.
The Federal Government, according to him, will ensure the security of all Nigerians.
He said, “Christmas and the New Year are renowned as festivals of peace, love and goodwill to all men.
“I, therefore, seize the opportunity of this occasion to renew my appeal for greater love, brotherliness, tolerance and peaceful co-existence among all our people.
“Our vision of a strong and prosperous nation can only be achieved in a peaceful and stable polity. We must therefore resolve collectively to consign to the past events like the recent and regrettable outbreak of communal violence in Jos, Plateau State.
“The Federal Government will strive even harder to fully guarantee the security and safety of Nigerians in all parts of the country.
“I also urge governors, who are the chief security officers in the states, to offer effective and equal protection to all residents at all times.”
The President in the same breath thanked Nigerians for their patience and support for his administration.
He said, “I thank you for your perseverance so far and urge you to continue to keep the faith. Notwithstanding the many challenges we have had to contend with as a nation, I believe we can look forward to 2009 and beyond with great optimism and hope.
“The challenges may seem daunting, but they are not beyond us as a people. Our inflexible tenacity, our incredible passion for excellence, and our resilient search for a better future mark us out as a people. They are part of our national heritage
“I thank you all, fellow compatriots, for your support thus far as we strive to overcome the challenges to our shared vision of a strong, united and prosperous nation, we shall continue to count on your goodwill and cooperation in the coming years.
“On our part, we assure you of our continued commitment and a renewed pace.”
However, he urged the populace to use the opportunity of the season to reflect, not just on the outgoing year, but particularly on his administration’s obligations to them.
He said, “I bring you warm greetings and best wishes as you celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
“All over the world, this period is both a time for celebration, and reflection.
“As you therefore, engage in this annual rite of renewal, I wish you a bountiful festive season, and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
