Nigerian satellite fails in space
The satellite has developed power trouble
A multi-million dollar Nigerian satellite launched in May 2007 has been shut down to prevent it spinning out of control and damaging others in orbit.
Chinese-built NigComSat-1 cost the African oil producer $340m (£228m).
The Nigerian government said insurance would pay for a replacement and Nigerians should still be proud of the country's satellite programme.
But telecoms experts told the BBC it was a "white elephant in space" and the whole operation was a "debacle".
NigComSat-1 was launched 18 months ago to much fanfare from the government, but it has been mired in controversy ever since.
On Tuesday, controllers shut the satellite down because it was having problems with its power supply, the government announced.
The satellite was meant to provide communications for government agencies and broadband internet'Worthy investment'
"This has been a real debacle from day one," a telecoms engineer told the BBC.
Nigeria has exported its electricity generation problems to space
Joke doing the rounds in Nigeria
The engineer, who works as a consultant for a multinational communications company, did not want to be named.
The satellite was limited because the type of frequency it used was disturbed by clouds in the atmosphere, and did not work properly in Nigeria's rainy season or during the Harmattan, when clouds of dust blow down from the Sahara, he said.
The satellite also operated on frequencies already allocated to other companies and interfered with other providers' equipment.
But Information Minister John Odey denied the satellite was not worth investing in.
"No technology can be a waste of money," he said.
"It is a worthy investment, and Nigerians should see it as desirable. It has served a purpose and will continue to do so."
Power trouble
Local media initially reported that the satellite had "gone missing".
But on Wednesday Minister of State for Science and Technology Alhassan Zaku told journalists it had lost power and had to be "parked, like you would park a car".
"If it wasn't parked and it lost all its power there would be no energy to even move it and it would be like a loose cannon and would keep rolling about and hit other satellites in the orbit," he told reporters.
According to analysts, Nigeria has made nearly $2 trillion in oil revenues over the last 30 years, but its population are mostly poor.
Africa's most populous nation lacks basic infrastructure like power and water, and many Nigerians thought the satellite showed the government did not have its priorities right.
The news that the satellite could not get enough power to run has led to jokes that, as one e-mail doing the rounds put it: Nigeria has "exported its electricity generation problems to space".

The Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has lamented the shutting down of the nation’s official website – www.nigeria.gov.ng – as a result of the inability of government officials to maintain the national flagship.

Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili
Akunyili, who spoke at the first meeting she had with heads of parastatals under the ministry in Abuja late on Tuesday, also gave all agencies in the ministry a deadline of March 2009 to establish their own websites.
She also barred officials of the ministry and the parastatals from receiving free telephone lines and cable televisions, directing those that already had such gifts to return them before the end of January 2009.
Noting that the incidence of poor telecommunications services has continued, the minister directed the Nigerian Communications Commission to monitor and report quality of service parameters on regular weekly basis.
She said, “Today, we live in an information age where access to information should be made readily available, and yet information about Nigeria from Nigeria is not easily accessible. I find it disheartening that the Ministry of Information and Communications does not have a website.
“It is also very discomforting that our flagship corporation, Nigerian Television Authority, does not have a website. It is unfortunate that the official government website www.nigeria.gov.ng, which was launched in 2005, and recoded 1.3 million visits in its first year, making it one of the most viable national websites in the world, has been shut down for many months. This website, which serves as a gateway to Nigeria, must be reactivated.
“Every parastatal must have an active and vibrant website up and running before the end of March 2009, and I am ready to support you to make sure that this happens. On our part, before the end of March 2009, this ministry will create a vibrant website that will enable people around the world to find everything they need to know about Nigeria in a click. This will be an interactive website that will allow people to ask questions and get answers. It will also provide polling opportunities as an avenue to know the feelings and desires of our people on various issues.”
On telecommunications, Akunyili said it was general knowledge that services rendered by telecom operators were poor, adding that most Nigerians were unhappy and expressing displeasure over the services of mobile telecom operators.
The minister said the incidences of dropped calls, poor voice signal quality and poor reception have caused unnecessary financial burdens for Nigerians as they carry multiple handsets to be able to connect to working networks.

From Facebook to 9jabook, originality meets ingenuity
Posted by Admin on October 1, 2008
I don’t mean to be over protective on this one, but the guys at 9jabook have thought of a ‘better and more ‘unique’ Nigerian factor to use as/for their name.
The Nigerian concept should be original and adjectivedlike what 9jabook presently sounds like.
1) My mind is ‘booking’ about ORIGINALITY:
I forsee Level-1 subsidiaries of 9jabook to be: wazobiabook, yorubabook, igbobook, hausabook and ‘the rest of us’. Level-2 would commence with lagosbook, abujabook, portharcourtbook, kadunabook, josbook, ekitibook, kanobook, ondobook, ibadanbook etc., At Level-3, our mentalities would be further sub-divided, for example: lagosbook can re-start with: ikejabook, surulerebook, ikoyibook, marylandbook etc. Every other ‘state’ can continue from wherever they want to. The most serious of lagosbook would be mushinbook and ajegunlebook.
I’m just trying to point out the need for ORIGINALITY, which is not a common word with Nigerian oriented forums, e-groups and 9jabooks lookalikes. Just this morning, I was reading about nairalanders.com. No pun intended. See, Nigeria is so wide and deep that we Nigerians cannot even fathom what and what is there, undiscovered.
2) What is 9jabook dot com?
Much ado about originalilty: so I landed on 9jabook.com and I thought its quite cool. I looked for info about what was new that we haven’t seen before. Here is what they(9jabook) have to say:
What is 9jabook?
this is the network of choice
When you create a 9jabook login, you can also add a set of basic details and your photo to your 9jabook account. . It also enables you to keep track of your friends and messages .
My search for ‘more information’ brought me to their login page, with these ‘9ja’ style kinda terms and conditions:
I agree to the 9jabook Please read these terms for www.9jabook.com. By using products, any part of the site or any of the content of the site you are making an agreement under its terms of use and privacy policy. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions you may not use them. Before you use 9jabook please: * be sure that your computer fully meets all technical requirement for the product. 1. Discrepancy of ISP provider due to technical requirements of a product cannot be an occasion for refunds for any kind of paid services or any other jamgbajantis. 2. You have no right to remove 9jabook links and logo from 9jabook without official permission from 9jabook as the original 9jabook developer. You can order links removal permission here. 3. The General Public License allows you to modify, to improve and even sell your results but the license should be intact but that is for GPL stuff only ! We appreciate your willingness to be up-to-date with your online community web site. That is why we constantly work at community software development and improvement. We apply all our efforts to make our products better with every new release, and we will continue to do so.
3) Dear 9jabook:
– what if I’m a foreigner married to a Nigerian and I don’t know the definition of jamgbajantis? I believe the correct spelling should be jagbajantis.but heck it is pidgin english who cares !
4) What is a/an soxl network? And please, if this is considered as new information that I’m unaware of, kindly educate me on this one: What is a soxl network? it is a means of turning web 2.0 speak into goodness
